For months, I have been asking God for His wisdom as I try to discern what to make of my life. Don’t get me wrong — Ever since I received Jesus as my Lord and Savior, I have experienced His amazing grace on a daily basis, and I’ve become happier and more complete than in the past.
There came a point in time when I tried to think about my life’s purpose and God’s will. That led me to start asking for God’s wisdom. Almost on a daily basis (and even up to now), I ask God for His wisdom to lead me towards His purpose for me and away from the wrong paths. I understand that without His heavenly wisdom, I might not be able to make the right decisions and discover His will for me.
As I read Proverbs 3, I realized that there are more benefits to wisdom apart from finding the right path. However, this is also where I became a bit confused:
“This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.” (Proverbs 3:8)
And in another verse:
“My son, preserve sound judgment and discernment, do not let them out of your sight; they will be life for you…” (Proverbs 3:21-22)
These verses seem to tell me that wisdom will make me healthier. “Really?”, I asked myself. I was skeptical at first, thinking that it’s probably just a minor benefit. I was under the impression that the health benefit is merely a side effect or a by-product of receiving God’s wisdom, because He will bless me with good health as well. But the question remained: “How does wisdom lead to good health?”
Reading the chapter further, I was awestruck by the swift answer that God revealed to me, through Proverbs 3:23-24. Here are the reasons why wisdom can give me good health and life:
“Then you will go on your way in safety…”
“… and your foot will not stumble;”
“When you lie down, you will not be afraid;”
“When you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.”
In just two verses, God has assured me that His wisdom will bring four additional benefits aside from knowing His will. As I discovered these benefits, I realized that these are the exact things that I need to experience good health and more years ahead of me. I need to feel safe, be protected from physical and spiritual dangers, be free from fears and insecurities, and have a good night’s sleep.
This revelation also made me realize how faithful God is. I have been claiming His promise to the prophet Jeremiah when He said:
“Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.” (Jeremiah 33:3)
I have called out to God for His wisdom, and He revealed things that I haven’t discovered yet. As I received His wisdom to understand what wisdom brings me, I became more passionate to ask for more of this heavenly wisdom. Thank You, Father God, for being faithful and true to Your promises!
